Newly designed “Schiffer- und Lotsenmuseum” in Bingen
In the town of Bingen, the gateway to the Middle Rhine, the small yet informative “Schiffer- & Lotsenmuseum” (mariner & mari-time pilot museum) on the “Kulturufer” or “cultural riverside” is well worth a visit. The exhibits, picture boards, models, specialist literature and photos find space in the pavilion of just 15 square metres, which was built in 1948 by the maritime pilots of the time. The museum is run by Bingen Mariners Association (Schifferverein). To mark the 75th anniversary of the museum, the building was renovated and the exhibition redesigned. Visitors can enjoy a modern, well-stocked, carefully and lovingly compiled and clearly organised exhibition focusing on the “Binger Loch” (narrow strait of the river close to Bingen), the everyday life of a maritime pilot, the river police, tugboat navigation and passenger shipping. Short films from the world of inland navigation run without sound in a continuous loop across two screens. The active members of the Mariners Association, especially chairman Ferdinand Engelhart and secretary Dr. Jürgen Kirsten, were responsible for the new museum concept and the renovation.
