Kaub

The picturesque village of Kaub on the banks of the Rhine in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley invites you to take a stroll round and linger awhile.

Although Kaub has less than 1,000 inhabitants it has plenty to offer its visitors. World famous and the subject of a million photos: the toll castle Plalzgrafenstein. Also worth a visit are Gutenfels Castle and the Blücher Museum, where Field Marshall Blücher stayed while transporting his army across the Rhine in the winter of 1813/14.

    Pfalzgrafenstein Castle

The fact that Pfalzgrafenstein Castle was once one of the most valuable customs posts on the Rhine is apparent just from its location: Situated in the middle of the river, this stronghold can only be reached by ferry. In 1327 Count Palatine and later Emperor Ludwig IV had a small pentagonal keep built on the small island in the Rhine as the first fortification – much to the annoyance of the bishops and even the pope then in power, who were concerned about the lucrative supremacy of the church when it came to levying tolls. When construction of the curtain wall and the battlements began in 1340, Pfalzgrafenstein’s fortifications were considerably strengthened. In 1504 the castle even survived a 39-day siege during the War of the Succession of Landshut undamaged. Without doubt, Pfalzgrafenstein Castle is today one of the most photographed subjects in the Middle Rhine Valley. A small foot passenger ferry conveys visitors from Kaub to the “ship of stone”.

    Blücher Museum

Kaub, also known as the pilot town on the Rhine, looks back on an eventful history. On New Year’s night in 1813/14, Field Marshal Blücher and his troops crossed the Rhine here. Today, the Blücher Museum is housed in his headquarters, the former "Stadt Mannheim” hotel. This museum offers an extensive historical exhibition dedicated to Field Marshal Blücher.

    Lotsenhaus Kaub

Until the mid-70s, the Rhine pilots’ house in Kaub was where pilots were stationed who steered ships between St. Goar and Bingen through this dangerous section of the Rhine. Because the waterway was widened in the early 1980s and technical systems help with navigation, pilots were no longer required here. As a result, an entire profession died out in Kaub. Today the common room serves as a small museum focused on the work of the pilots on the Rhine.
