Nostalgia route

A journey through time with the paddle steamer Goethe
Since tourists have existed, the Rhine – and in particularly the Middle Rhine – has exerted a magical attraction on them. After all, here they can find everything their heart could desire. If you don’t simply want to explore the Middle Rhine but also wish to immerse yourself in the times of earlier travellers on the Rhine, you should book a ticket for KD’s Nostalgia Route.

Sightseeing for connoisseurs: the KD Nostalgia Route. This takes you from Koblenz, through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Middle Rhine Valley, past the icons which symbolise the romance of the Rhine, and on to Rüdesheim, the little town which countless tourists, above all from overseas, regard as typically German. And one of the main attractions on this day-long outing is the ship on which you travel, the GOETHE.

Map

A legendary ship

The Goethe attracts attention wherever she moors up on the Rhine, although the inhabitants of the towns and villages between Koblemz and Rüdesheim ought to have become accustomed to the sight of this unique historical vessel by now, for indeed she cruises that stretch of the river every day from April to October, carrying her passengers back to the good old days. But despite the daily routine the Goethe still triggers off reactions of astonishment and enthusiasm: "that ships like that still exist!" And indeed, the vessel is exotic by comparison with all the streamlined, modern river cruisers, with her unmistakeable tall chimney visible from afar.

Soak up the atmosphere on board

There is a special atmosphere on board when the giant paddle wheels are turning and ploughing through the waters of the Rhine, creating the Goethe's own, unmistakeable soundtrack. The interior also recreates the feeling of the year in which the ship was built: 1913. Shimmering bronze handrails, polished wood and decorative forms remind one of the early art deco period. The vessel's interior is so charming that it is almost a shame to sit out on the sundeck during the cruise through the Middle Rhine Valley.

A tour for enthusiasts

But whether you sit out on deck in the fresh air or down below, the Goethe and the Middle Rhine are always like a perfect pair; anyone who can appreciate the many historical details of the vessel will also have no difficulty enjoying the beauty of the cultural landscape through which it carries him. It was here in the nineteenth century that the idea of the Romantic Rhine was born, and it is still apparent everywhere why this river with its vineyards and many castles exerted such a fascination on travellers, poets and aesthetes from every corner of the world.

Points of interest by the dozen

When, at nine o'clock in the morning, the Goethe weighs anchor to set sail from Koblenz, the imposing fortress of Ehrenbreitstein salutes you from high upon its rocky cliff, and that is only the beginning of a seemingly never-ending series of castles and forts strung together like pearls in a necklace on the hillsides above the river. Among the landmarks which you can enjoy in comfort during the cruise on KD's Nostaliga Route are Marksburg Castle, Stolzenfels Castle, Castle Katz, Pfalz Castle near Kaub, Stahleck Castle and the Mouse Tower in Bingen, not to mention all the picturesque villages, large or small, which nestle at the foot of the many vineyards along the banks of the river. There is indeed much to see when the Goethe sets sail for the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

A cliff shrouded in legend

One of the many highlights of such a day cruise comes when you sail past the fabled Loreley Rock, which juts out into the Rhine across from Oberwesel, and which in olden times brought death or ruin to so many sailors. Today it is the poem by Heine, set to music by Friedrich Silcher, which springs to the mind of most people when they hear the name Loreley, and indeed it is this song ... "I know not if there is a reason ..."  which rings out from the ship's loudspeakers when the Goethe glides quietly (and safely) past the Loreley.

An interesting fact

The world famous poem about the Loreley Saga was written by Heinrich Heine in 1824. It became popular after it was set to music by Friedrich Silcher in 1837.
Die Loreley Sage

Plenty of time for nostalgia

If you wish you can spend as long as ten hours on board. That's how long the paddle-steamer takes for its cruise from Koblenz to Rüdesheim and back. So you can spend the whole day on board. But of course you can get off at any of the countless KD landing-stages to do some sightseeing, before you reboard the Goethe on its return journey to Koblenz.
