A journey with bike and boat

Ideal conditions for a successful cycle tour: The cycle path is wonderfully flat, the landscape is varied, large and small towns and villages repeatedly invite you to linger a while, and it is virtually impossible to lose your way. And the icing on the cake is that KD’s attractive combined ticket for bike and ship ensures that you do not have to cycle the whole way in both directions. Where can you find all this? Along the Rhine, between Cologne and Linz.

First the bike ride and then the boat trip – or the other way round? With the combined ticket for bike and ship, it’s completely up to you how you plan your journey. There are also no rules governing which means of transport you must use to cover a particular stretch – so it’s perfect for people who like to do their own thing and a great idea for a day’s holiday just a stone’s throw from your own front door.

Begin on board

For connoisseurs the ideal start to a wonderful day out might look like this: arrive unstressed just after nine o'clock at the KD landing stage in Cologne Old Town, either bringing your own bike, or renting one from the Bike Hire Station just around the corner. With your KD Two-in-one ticket Bike & Boat purchased in advance online and printed out at home, just stroll leisurely up the gangway on to the ship. KD's crew will show you where the bike storage area is, and you can then find the best place on the ship to sit and enjoy the upcoming cruise.

Total sunshine!

When the sun is shining that would of course be on the observation deck, with a perfect view of the Cathedral and the Old Town and later of the changing rural scenery. When the anchor is hoisted at half past nine you glide off and set sail upstream. How about breakfast? The catering crew has all kinds of freshly prepared delicacies available to fortify you for your cycle tour. Where that actually begins is for you to decide; the ship takes nearly an hour to reach its next stop in Köln-Porz and a another half an hour to reach Wesseling. If you want a really relaxed start you can even stay on board for the three hour cruise to Bonn.

Speaking of Bonn: of course no-one has to travel all the way to Cologne just to start his Bike & Boat tour. You can begin at any KD landing stage, and in Bonn there is also a Bike Hire Station at the landing stage.

Mount your bike!

Whether your outing begins with a relaxing breakfast on board or on the bicycle, you still have to make one big decision: will you be exploring the left or right bank of the river? On the right bank are such highlights as Drachenfels Cliff with its magnificent view over the river and the Siebengebirge Mountains, or Königswinter and the Sea Life aquarium, or the red wine-village of Unkel. On the left bank you could visit Remagen and its famous Apollinaris Church, and the Arp Museum.

By the way, the decision to explore the right or left bank is quite a serious one, because once you leave Bonn there are no more bridges for a very long distance, and only way to cross the river is by ferry.

The river points the way

A cycle tour along the Rhine, whether on the left bank or the right one, is indeed a perfect recreation programme, for the cycle paths run along the water's edge and are thus wonderfully level. Not only that, but the river points the way and eliminates any need for planning how to get to your destination. In fact the journey is its own reward, because on a bike you can best enjoy the scenery and highlights, you are outdoors and can always stop whenever you wish, for sightseeing, a cup of coffee or simply for a rest.

Return journey with a view

No matter how spontaneous you might be in planning your Boat & Bike combination, there is one thing you should keep in mind:  KD's timetable. If you are planning to use the ship for all or part of your return journey you must be at the landing stage on time, otherwise you'll be cycling home. For instance the ship leaves Linz at 16:50 hrs on its way back to Cologne and downstream the ships gather so much speed that it takes only ninety minutes to reach Bonn. If you wish to go all the way to Cologne that will take another two hours; plenty of time to enjoy some delicacies from the KD kitchen, or just to sit with a cool beer or a glass of Rhine wine and think back on the day.
