St. Goarshausen

The town of the Loreley lies at the foot of the Loreley Rock. That impressive formation rises up 193 metres above the river in the Middle Rhine Valley.

The saga of the blond Rhine mermaid Loreley, who is said to have lured countless sailors to their deaths, is famous throughout the world, thanks to the poem written by Heinrich Heine and set to music by Friedrich Silcher. Even today's visitor can sense the power of the legend when, from high up on the cliff, he looks down into the swirling Rhine and realises how dangerous the narrows are. Also worthwhile is a visit to the spruce little Old Town below Castle Katz.

Loreley Visitor Centre

The Loreley Visitor Centre, which is situated on the Loreley rock, was opened in 2000 as part of the EXPO project which found worldwide recognition. In the Visitor Centre you will find a six-part exhibition and an experience room with a 3D film featuring the topic of the “World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley”. There the focus is above all on the legend of the Loreley, the landscape, the culture and the people in the region, plus wine-growing, the remarkable fauna and flora, the geology, shipping on the Rhine and much more.

Loreley Museum

In the 14th century the town tower was built when Count Katzenelnbogen was in power. This tower was used to defend the town and, as was customary in those days, to collect customs duties. The historical town tower accommodates a small but impressive collection dealing with the history of wine and the region. Equally interesting is the wine tavern on the ground floor, which is centred on the wine press – also known as the “Torkel-Keller”(which, roughly translated, means “Drunken Stagger Cellar”).

Summer bobsleigh track Loreley-Bob

A special attraction is located on the Loreley plateau, on the premium hiking route “Rheinsteig”: the summer bobsleigh track LORELEY-BOB. Guests can speed down to the valley on comfortable sleights, travelling at up to 40 km/h along a 700-metre stainless steel run. First a lifter system transport you conveniently to the mountain station, where your sleigh is automatically detached for the trip downhill.

  • Tip: You can obtain reduced tickets for the bobsleigh track in advance through our KD Ticket Offices.
