Peace Museum Bridge at Remagen

Since 1980, the towers of the bridge, which was built from 1916-1918, have housed the Peace Museum “Bridge at Remagen” which presents the history of the earlier Ludendorff Bridge and of Remagen prisoner of war camp. It became world famous on 7 March 1945 when American troops unexpectedly succeeded in crossing the Rhine there. This meant that the end of the Second World War was at hand.

Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck

The neo-classical Rolandseck Railway Station from the year 1856 was the terminus of a private railway from Cologne. Its superb ballroom was a meeting place for society in the middle of the last century and the setting for cultural history on the Rhine. Today Rolandseck Railway Station is connected to the new museum building, designed by Richard Meier and located on the hills overlooking the Rhine, by a tunnel beneath the railway tracks. The museum displays works by Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp, international contemporary art and regular visiting exhibitions.

Roland’s Arch

Roland’s Arch is the last window arch in the ruins of a medieval castle. After it collapsed in 1839, the romantic poet Ferdinand Freiligrath regarded it as his duty to preserve its heritage and called for donations to reconstruct the arch. The view extends to the Siebengebirge with Drachenfels mountain and to Nonnenwerth island with St. Clemens monastery.
