Marksburg Castle

An impressive landmark and a jewel in the crown of the “UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley”, Marksburg Castle, which was built from the 13th to the 15th century, is perched majestically high above the river. It is the only hill castle on the Rhine which has never been destroyed. As the seat of the German Castles Association, it represents how knights lived in a castle in the late Middle Ages like hardly any other fortification. The guided tours through the complex which take place each day impress visitors from the first moment when they climb up the rocky knights’ staircase. You then see two batteries of cannon and a lovely medieval herb and medicinal plant garden. Then come a wine cellar, an authentic kitchen and great hall, cabinet rooms and chapel, and also exhibitions of instruments of torture and knights’ armour. The interesting guided tours not only explain many aspects of medieval castle life; they also show how the Middle Ages live on in many of the expressions still used in German today.
